Theft defense begins with intent and proof

Do not assume a low dollar amount guarantees a misdemeanor, no filing or automatic dismissal. Conversely, an accusation from a business does not establish every element of an offense.
Review surveillance and transaction evidence
Useful evidence may include complete surveillance recordings, register records, item scans, timestamps and communications about returns or permission. A defense review asks whether the person is correctly identified, whether all relevant transactions were considered and whether the claimed value is supported.
Explain any statements you made to store staff or officers. Do not create new receipts, alter messages or ask anyone to change records. Give counsel the original materials and an accurate account, including facts you believe are unfavorable. That allows the defense to address problems before they become surprises.
Repayment, court proceedings and practical consequences
Repaying money or returning property does not by itself ensure that a criminal case will be dismissed. Before responding to a civil demand or signing a statement, discuss how it may relate to the criminal allegations. Possible resolutions depend on the evidence, record and applicable law.
